Do you remember the last time you bent over to lift something or reached out and twisted the wrong way? If you’re like me, you haven’t forgotten the pain. Sometimes no matter how careful we are, our bodies just don’t handle the strain. Now imagine placing your body at risk like that every day in your chosen career.
When Tina needed to lift a patient, she didn’t realize she was about to become a troubling statistic. The patient was over six feet tall and weighed more than 200 pounds, so Tina did what nursing schools and hospitals across the country teach: she gathered a few colleagues, and they lifted the patient as a team. In Tina’s words, “And as we swung him up onto the bed, I felt something pop.”
According to the Department of Labor and Statistics, more than 35,000 nursing employees injure themselves every year as a result of moving or lifting patients who are unsteady on their feet or immobile.
“It is critical that we practice safe lifting for both our patients and our staff,” says Jackie Ethier, MS, RN, Director of Inpatient Services and Safe Patient Handling Team Co-Leader. “Having more mechanical lift equipment available at Cheshire Medical Center will help ensure our patients and nursing staff are safer, reducing the potential for injury while maximizing clinical outcomes.”
As a nonprofit, Cheshire Medical Center relies on the generosity of people like you.
